Q’s Song of the Day: “White Blank Page” – Mumford & Sons

Q’s Song of the Day is “White Blank Page” by Mumford & Sons.

This band is from the UK and have only recently made some waves in the US music scene. I have actually written a blog about them before, find it here. This song has reached out to me lately, as did yesterday’s song. This band’s ability to create surges in energy and dissonance is phenomenal and unparalleled by any other musical group out there right now. Their musicianship is also something the shake a stick at. They utilize everything from banjo to strings sections – pure genius.

The most captivating element of this song to me is the voice in which it is written and sung. Marcus Mumford, the lead singer, has such a raw sound that embodies the emotion he sings about. It transports the listener into the song and pours the emotion he emits over the listener’s head. Not many singers can do that.

Allow me to point out some of the most intriguing lyrics I identified with.

“Tell me now where was my fault in loving you with my whole heart”

Sometimes we fall or stumble due to no “fault” of our own. However, it is but human nature to want reconciliation with our past transgressions. There is really no response to that question that will heal anything, but it does not mean that one does not want to ask it.

“You desired my attention, but denied my affections”

There is a comfort developed between two lovers. This comfort is so rooted and becomes so much a part of one’s function as a person that the thought of its disappearance causes us to do things out of character. We as humans want our cake and we want to eat it to. Unfortunately, in some instances it forces us to use and manipulate others to get what we want. The important thing is identifying it and being able to set aside those opaque love clouds and evaluate the situation for what it is.

What do you think of the song and lyrics?
